In 2008, Mary Nyawira joined Ngong Huruma Children’s Home, arriving with seven other children following the closure of Watoto Wetu Home. Like many of the children welcomed into our care, Mary came from a difficult background. A total orphan, Mary’s early life was marked by uncertainty and loss. However, she was not alone, she had two sisters, and although they were separated into different homes after Watoto Wetu closed, they later reunited and rebuilt their bond.
At the time of her arrival, Mary was in Class Seven. She enrolled at Ngong Huruma Primary School, where she successfully completed her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). Her academic journey continued at Ngong Huruma Secondary School, where her determination and resilience shone through, culminating in strong results in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Mary’s ambition didn’t stop there. She went on to pursue a Diploma in Hospitality Management at NIBS Technical College, a significant step that set the stage for her future career.
Today, Mary is a shining example of transformation and perseverance. She is happily married and thriving as she takes care of her own family, embodying the hope and purpose that Huruma Children’s Home strives to instill in every child we support.
Mary’s story reminds us that with love, support, and opportunity, the future is bright, no matter how dark the beginning.
